The Book is Delivered. So What Now?

To contact us Click HERE

I turned in my contracted Love Inspired Historical manuscriptJuly 2, exactly one week ago. I’ve heard of authors deliver books early, but I’mnot one of them. Even with dividing my word count by the time I have, I still workright up to the deadline revising and revising and revising. If you're still an unpublished writer, you've probably experienced this push for a deadline when you enter a manuscript in a contest like the Genesis or Golden Heart.

I've been asked how authors know when to stop revising. The answer for me is when the calendar says I must. I believeI will improve on this, a worthy goal, but a goal I haven't yet attained. Please tell me I'm not alone. LOL

Once the book is delivered, I feel equal parts of remorse andelation. Remorse since I’m rarely satisfied with the end product. Elation as I’mphysically and mentally weary and glad to have the story gone. I know my editor will have amore realistic and objective opinion. By the time I get the book back forrevisions I will have been away from the story long enough to have a clearerview of what changes I want to make beyond what my editor requests. My contracts allow me to have a life. If I have a multi-book contract, I have another deadlinealready set. Even so, I take time to catch up with those things I’veneglected.
Here's a few activities that call my name:          Chores: I’m not crazy about housework but love a clean orderlyhouse. I’m blessed to have help with household tasks, especially when I’m ondeadline. Still I’ve put off chores that I want to do. Who knew that work couldsound downright delightful? J
  • Clear off my desks, both my office desk and thedesk in the kitchen. I toss those notes and scribbled reminders cluttering my office desk that I no longer need now that the book is finished. On my kitchen desk, Iwade through stacks of outdated store coupons, notes to myself, things I’ve kept to look over andtoss or save. Organizing my desks lifts a weight off my shoulders.
·        Iron. HGTV makes the chore  almost like amini-vacation. For those of you who hate to iron, you won’t relate. But afterturning in a book, I find engaging in this mindless chore relaxing.

·        Deadhead flowers in the garden. Right about now, my daisiesand coreopsis start to look bedraggled. The heat we're having in the midwest shortens my sessions, but I still enjoy making the garden tidy. I’m kind to the goldfinches and leavea few seed-filled coreopsis heads behind. Note the bookworm near my feet. I'm sure he's reading a Seeker book.
·      Rearrange furniture. A change makes the furnishingslook new and energizes me. I need my dh’s help with the heavy stuff, but I’m incharge. Maybe part of the charm. LOL
Getting control of all the electric cords comes last.
Shop: I miss being in the stores.  Since I turned in my book, my daughter and I spent a fun afternoon with her daughter shopping for school clothes and having lunch.     Exercise: Even on deadline, I usually manage to get a daily walk, but rarely work out. Still, writers sit a lot and need to work their muscles to keep strongand flexible. Kudos if you don’t fall off the exercise wagon when you're on deadline, either a publisher's or your own.
Play: I look forward to stamping greeting cards and playing golf, acouple of activities I skip when I'm on deadline. These stampers friends are a creative bunch.
Vacation: My dh and I plan our vacation around my book deadlines. I don’t work on vacation unless a trip is a research opportunity or a writer's conference.  Family: Family comes before my writing but in a time crunch, I may have to miss a grandchild's ballgame or meet. Here's four reasons I want to be there. Friends: I like to see friends or at least chat by phone or email.
Sleep: The last week or so before my deadline I get about fivehours a night. I wake up very early with my brain immediately going to the book.
Once I've caught up on my sleep, handled a few chores and connected with people, I'm back at storytelling, refreshed and renewed.
So what, if anything, is the takeaway from this post? First, writing books is hard work. No matter how many books we've written, a finished manuscript is something to be proud of, to celebrate. Treat yourself. Iron. LOL Second, recharge your batteries and take care of yourself. Eat well. Get those zzzs. Exercise. Third, story people are wonderful but they don't replace flesh and blood human beings. Take time to fill the creativity tank. We can't always travel, but a stay-cation is probably more relaxing.
Fourth, unfinished chores can add pressure. Getting on top of things is energizing.
So how do you relax? Or do you? Any tips for having a balanced life? Or is there any such thing?
I brought ham and cheese egg bakes, coffee cake, fresh fruit, juice, tea and coffee.Cyber cooking is easy. Did you notice I didn’t listcooking as an activity I long to do more of? J
Those leaving a comment will be in a drawing for either a critique of the first ten pages of an inspirational romance or a ten-dollar Amazon gift card--winner's choice. Janet

The Dazzling Book Report, by Jane O'Connor

To contact us Click HERE
Fancy Nancy likes to use fancy words, so when she gets to write a book report, she chooses one with the fancy name of Sacajawea. Nancy spends most of her time creating a dazzling book report cover that reflects her artistic talent. After all, she is the second-best artist in her class. Writing two sentences is all she can muster before she falls asleep. Crestfallen, she admits to her teacher her error in spending too much time on the cover. Her teacher becomes her heroine when she asks Nancy to tell the class about the heroine, Sacajawea.

This story is a learning lesson about time management with a tiny bit of history. The colorful illustrations are bright and fun, and defining the fancy words within the story was a great idea.

The Red Blazer Girls, by Michael D. Beil

To contact us Click HERE
Stand back Miss Marple, Nancy Drew and the notorious girls of St Trinians - the Red Blazer girls are here to stay. Michael D. Beil’s Red Blazer Girls is hopefully the beginning of a most delightful series and would be a terrific movie – we can only hope.
The scene is St. Veronica’s School for Girls in Manhattan. St Veronica’s is a not too snobby yet progressive school for girls and is the sister school for St. Andrews School for Boys. Everyone meets at the local coffee hangout – Perkatory - before and after school to review adventure options. The latest escapade begins with the sighting of a strange figure in the old nunnery. Investigation by the girls results in a search for hidden treasure, mathematical / archaeology clues and the reuniting of an estranged family.
Red Blazer Girls serves up a heap of friendship and intrigue with liberal doses of tongue and cheek humor wrapped up in the beginnings of romance. Red Blazer Girls is a fun read for everyone. I know I will be looking for the continuing exploits of the St. Veronica’s girls.

An Interview With The Author—Dan DeWitt

    What's your writing background?

Nothing too exciting. I have a Bachelor's degree in English, which means next to nothing when it comes to writing fiction. Still, I took a bunch of creative writing classes and really enjoyed them. Before that, I dabbled in short stories here and there, but wasn't ready to try and make a career out of it. I wrote one screenplay in 2001 that advanced to the second round at Austin (and I'm about ¼ of the way into its novelization). I've always been a voracious reader, and I got really serious after participating in NaNoWriMo in 2006. Since then, I've published a couple of short stories in e-zines and one non-fiction profile in a local magazine. But I'm really just a guy who loves to read fiction and tell a story from time to time.

Whatever Happened to Janie?, by Caroline B. Cooney

Do you ever wish you could disappear, run away, be somebody completely new? What would that mean to those left behind?

Whatever Happened to Janie by Caroline B. Cooney explores the unthinkable, unimaginable and terribly tragic kidnapping of a three year old girl. She did not choose to be kidnapped but neither did she make any real effort to reconnect with her real family after she unexpectedly recognizes herself as the missing child on the back of a milk carton.

The grief, relief, anger and frustration felt by both sets of her parents never seems to dent Janie’s self absorbed pity party. Utter rage bottled up for years provides a stomach churning stage for her biological siblings. You can live with devastating ache for only so long – until a semblance of normality needs to be found.

Janie’s choices have a far reaching impact for her two families. It is up to the reader to decide if Janie is worth the effort and tears.

      Our Anchor Still Holds!

Are you Anchored in Jesus? If so, Our Anchor will always hold in good times, stormy times or just every day life. It may seem as thou life may sweep us away with the tide. But as long as we stand on God's Word and not let Satan defeat us, Our Anchor Will Hold........ The path we take sometimes leads us into slipper slopes. And we feel that the world is caving in. In those times is when we need to let God lead. I know that is not easy. I know from experience, my own path has not always been easy. I was told yesterday from a dear sweet sister in the Lord that we raise our children to be self sufficient to be on their own, to stand on their own two feet, etc. but we really need to be teaching them that the only way to "STAND" is by letting Jesus Lead. And only then can we really have an ANCHOR THAT HOLDS.....

So there you have it, my second post on my new feature, Sunday's with Rev. Kim on Breath of Life.
Please stop by on Sunday's and feel free to join in by leaving me a comment with your thoughts on the subject.

        Insurgent by Veronica Roth
One choice can transform you--or it can destroy you. But every choice has consequences, and as unrest surges in the factions all around her, Tris Prior must continue trying to save those she loves--and herself--while grappling with haunting questions of grief and forgiveness, identity and loyalty, politics and love.

Tris's initiation day should have been marked by celebration and victory with her chosen faction; instead, the day ended with unspeakable horrors. War now looms as conflict between the factions and their ideologies grows. And in times of war, sides must be chosen, secrets will emerge, and choices will become even more irrevocable--and even more powerful. Transformed by her own decisions but also by haunting grief and guilt, radical new discoveries, and shifting relationships, Tris must fully embrace her Divergence, even if she does not know what she may lose by doing so.

"New York Times" bestselling author Veronica Roth's much-anticipated second book of the dystopian "Divergent" series is another intoxicating thrill ride of a story, rich with hallmark twists, heartbreaks, romance, and powerful insights about human nature

      Convergence by J.D. Watts
In modern times, mankind believes they know all that there is to know about the world around them. Arrogant in their ignorance, they travel through life completely unaware of the other beings in their midst, the other Children of Creation. Celestial Angels and Fallen walk amongst them unseen, while the third beings of creation, the Guardians, live along side them, protecting them from attacks of the Fallen.

Daniella Rossi is a nineteen year old college student who sees the world quite differently than those around her. From infancy, she was aware of the beings that walked among her kind who were not like them, as well as her own personal Guardian who watched over her. Dani always knew she was different, but she never dreamed the full scope of her importance.

So, that's what I'm reading...What are you reading this week?
      And as always, Happy Reading.....

Book Review: Partials by Dan Wells

      Title: Partials
      Author:
      Pub. Date: 2/28/2012
      Publisher: Balzer + Bray
      Format: Hardback
      Pages:  468
      ISBN# 0062071041

      Book Description:
Humanity is all but extinguished after a war with partials—engineered organic beings identical to humans—has decimated the world’s population. Reduced to only tens of thousands by a weaponized virus to which only a fraction of humanity is immune, the survivors in North America have huddled together on Long Island. The threat of the partials is still imminent, but, worse, no baby has been born immune to the disease in over a decade. Humanity’s time is running out.

When sixteen-year-old Kira learns of her best friend’s pregnancy, she’s determined to find a solution. Then one rash decision forces Kira to flee her community with the unlikeliest of allies. As she tries desperately to save what is left of her race, she discovers that the survival of both humans and partials rests in her attempts to answer questions of the war’s origin that she never knew to ask.

Combining the fast-paced action of The Hunger Games with the provocative themes of Battlestar Galactica, Partials is a pulse-pounding journey into a world where the very concept of what it means to be human is in question—one where our sense of humanity is both our greatest liability, and our only hope for survival.

      My Review:
Where do I start with out giving any thing away or coping any other review? Okay, I will start with OH MY GOODNESS!!!  I absolutely could not put this down. Was so wrapped up in Kira's young life that has already seen more and done more than I would have done at her age. Yes, even in a book.

Dan Wells has a gripping story from the very beginning and I can not wait to get into the next book. Grant it that this has some things that are possible way out there, but for the most part it is something that we actually could face some day.

I love reading about strong hero's but give me a book about a young girl who ends up being the heroin! Well Kira not only takes the cake but Dan Wells writes her lines to seem as if you could be her. And the what if's that went on in my mind while reading this, let's just say..."Don't know if I could have"...  But I will not go any further due to not wanting to give away any spoilers.

I will say this and it does come from Amazon, this is a Young Adult book: Reading level: Ages 14 and up. As to my review rating this is some of my feelings concerning the book. A real page turner, exciting, loving at times, mind blowing book could not put it down. So for those reasons I have to give Partials a Breath of Life rating of:

Paula Rose Michelson has a dramatic saga that sucked me in from the very beginning.

I can not relate to having to hide my faith in public personally, but have spoken to others through out my life that have. Naomi is only 15 years old starting out. And even at that age has already made some tough choices. Then to sail across the ocean with a family she thought would get her to America: the land of the free. Naomi's story is tear jerking to say the least.

Secrets, memories, family, torn apart, love, discovery, a life long dream. How do all these things come together for Naomi? How does a naive fifteen year old girl grow up in a world that she knows nothing or no one?

I can not say it enough, I was engrossed in Naomi's life that putting the book down was next to impossible. I would read in the evening so I could have quite time with out getting interrupted. Then try to sleep, huh.... I would lay there trying to solve or work with Naomi on how to get through something until I would have to get up and finish that part of the book. It did take me a little while to read because I savored every word, sentence, chapter.

Author Paula Rose Michelson is an AWESOME Author. Can not wait till her next book is out. All of the Characters were so amazing. The biblical references were so to the point that I would do some research of my own. I was really interested in the facts of the book. The different cultures were also amazing to learn how different things are. Will not go any further due to not wanting to give away any more about the book. It is Diffidently A Must Read!

So, for the best story line, awesome characters, fantastic heroine, for leaving me wanting more, if I could, would give an even bigger rating. I am giving CASA de Naomi The House of Blessing by Paula Rose Michelson my Breath of Life rating of:

Humor Me with Guest Lindi Peterson!

      To contact us Click HERE

Missy, here. I'm excited to have my long-time good friend and critique partner Lindi Peterson with us today. Welcome Lindi! Y'all are going to enjoy hearing from her. If you've read her first book, Her Best Catch, you'll know how great Lindi is with humor!
Also, I'd be remiss if I didn't tell you her new novel from Bell Bridge Books just released the other day!! When I read the draft of this story, I called her and told her that I just knew her editor Deb Smith would buy the book in about 30 seconds flat. Well, I was close. I think she bought it in 24 hours.  :) :) So be sure to check out this fantastic story, Summer's Song!

      Humor Me!
      By Lindi Peterson

I can’t helpit. I like to laugh. I like to smile.
There’s astation on the Sirius channel my husband listens to all the time. There’s a lotof talking on it, and there’s a show where there is a gal and a guy and theychat back and forth. The gal has a really LOUD laugh and this past weekendwhile we were listening she bursts out with this laugh. My first thought was‘how annoying is that?’
But then itcame to me that no laughter should be annoying simply because of what it is. Laughteris the outpouring of giddiness inside. If anything it should be contagious. Somy spirit was put into check immediately. It’s kind of like our singing voice. God gave us that voice and He likesit when we sing loud in church, even though the person standing next to usgives us that cross-eyed look that is meant to silence us. (No, I never getthat look. :))
Some peopleare just naturally funny. I read Kristin Billerbeck’s blog because she makes me laugh. She’s true to life, doesn’t mincewords, and can put a smile on my face in almost every post she writes. So Ivisit her blog often.
Moving fromblog posts to novels. Seekerville has amazing authors. Authors who know how towrite humor, so I was a little hesitant about writing this post. But just likethere are only 16 plots or something like that, and we all keep writing novels, there’s more than one way to approach humor. And there are several types ofhumor.
I’m goingwith the subtle type. You know, the type that’s interjected under the radar, soto speak. Of course, I must preface this by revealing some information to you.I’ve often sent my manuscripts to critique partners and they place those smileyfaces and LOL comments where I, as the author, didn’t think I was being funny. There are places where I’m thinking I’m going to elicit one of those cherishedsmiley faces and there is nothing. What I’m trying to say is that sometimeswhat we think is funny, others don’t. So take those smiley faces where you can get them, and hmmm, smile.

Here is anexcerpt from my new release, Summer’s Song. There is an obvious humor line anda subtle humor line.
Set up:  Heroine, recovering pop-princess Summer’smanager, Coleman, has scheduled an interview with a talk-show. Summer didn’twant to do it, but didn’t want to be difficult. Also, the hero, Levi, told hershe had a chance to tell the world how she’s changed. At this stage theinterview isn’t going like the talk show host thought it would. She’s mad andis confronting Summer about it.
“Somebody get Coleman on the phone,” she yells. “He misledme.” (talk-show host)         “I’msorry.” (Heroine, Summer)         “Thelast thing I need is bad girl meets God on my show. Paul! We’re done here. Callmy driver and wrap this disaster up.”         Sheuncrosses her arms, probably getting ready to bolt.         “Ijust don’t want to be cardboard.”         “What?”she asks.          “Idon’t want to be cardboard,” I say a little louder now. “I want to be fudge.”         “Honey, take another pill.”         Withthose parting words she glares at me, turns away then leaves.         Aloud clap sounds. Then another. I turn to find Levi standing five feet awayfrom me. How could I have not seen him and how long has he been here?         Heclaps one more time. “That’s my girl.”         “I’min so much trouble.”         “Youcan’t worry about it.”         “Thiswas my big chance. And I blew it. She didn’t believe me. Why couldn’t Iconvince her?”         Hewalks to me. “You look beautiful.”         “Ieven wore my church dress. Honestly. Why couldn’t I convince her?”         “Shedidn’t want to be convinced. She wanted dirt and you wouldn’t give it to her.”         “She’sleaving. Coleman is going to be furious.”         Leviplaces his hands on my shoulders. “Forget about Coleman. Forget about MeghanCascade. How do you feel?”         Istare into his eyes, reflective of what I want to be. Who I want to be.          Smilingfrom deep down in my soul, I put my hands on his waist. “I feel great. I feelfree. I feel like. . . .” and before I can finish my sentence his lips covermine.         Myheart totally slams my chest.         Iclose my eyes and watch bright lights explode. His lips are softer than Iimagined, fiery with passion, sweet like honey.          I’mlost.         Inhim.         Inhis kiss.         Hesurrounds me with his arms, ends the kiss, then buries his head in my hair, hislips close to my ear. “Sweet, so sweet,” he whispers.         AndI thought I was in trouble a few minutes ago.

So for me, theobvious humor line is: “Honey, take another pill.”The subtle humorline is: “I even wore my church dress.”
(Note:The church dress line will make more sense when you read the book. Also, thefudge/cardboard line will be explained—promise!)
The line, “I evenwore my church dress.”, is spoken in total seriousness by my heroine. The hero,Levi, and the reader all know that you can’t really change who you are by whatyou wear. And my heroine’s motivation isn’t to imply that, yet that’s what itimplies. Also, look at the line above it.
Hewalks to me. “You look beautiful.”
My heroine doesn’trespond to that line at all. And trust me, looking beautiful is something sheknows she does well. It’s a huge part of who she was, and her lack of responseshows how she has changed.
And I didn’t sitaround thinking and planning all this as I was writing the dialogue. It justhappened. My first draft of any story consists of A LOT of dialogue. I have togo back and fill in all the other crazy important details, like setting andemotion. When I’m revising I look for the places that the timing of thedialogue won’t be interrupted as I insert the other details.
Dialogue may notbe the thing you do naturally. It may be setting or emotion or something else.If you hone down what comes naturally, then you can build the other importantaspects into your story.
As with otheraspects of writing, humor is all about timing, cadence, and the beat. The how-to book,Self Editing For Fiction Writers, is always on my desk. It has a chaptertitled, Easy Beats. It goes into great detail how important beats are in yournovel to create tension and give the reader breathing space. I spend a lot oftime on my chapter endings thinking about not just the perfect line to keep thereader turning the pages, but also making sure the timing, the beat, is there.
Ithought I was in trouble a few minutes ago.
I wanted thereader to smile and maybe laugh when they read the last line of thatscene.  Leave them (thereader) happy!
What do you feellike you do naturally when you write? Or if you are a reader, do you like bookswith humor?
Thanks toSeekerville for having me as a guest blogger. These ladies and their readersare amazing and I love visiting anytime!
So, here’sthe deal. We’re giving away 2 copies of Summer’s Song and 2 gift/review copiesof my first novel, Her Best Catch. If you’ve smiled or laughed while readingthis post, indicate in the comments section and you’ll be entered in thedrawing for one of the copies.

REMEMBER EVERYTHING YOU KNOW ~ MARY 'FORGETFUL' CONNEALY

      To contact us Click HERE
It seems like I’ve been kind of Yell-y lately and that is just wrong of me.

It took me ten years to get my first book published so what do I know, huh?

I suppose I may STILL not know anything, but clearly that possibility isn't enough to shut me up.

What I want to talk to you about today is something I remember doing every time I’d start a new book.

Before I go into that...I don’t think I’m exactly normal in that everytime I’d finish a book, I’d just start right in on a new one. Yes, I’d revise and yes I’d submit the finished manuscript to editors, agents and contests. But I didn’t DWELL on it. (much) I’d just cast it out into cyberspace (although when I started we didn’t call it cyberspace, we call it the mail box, but the example holds.)
So, I’d always be daydreaming what’s next. And looking forward to starting a new book. I’d see newspaper articles and just….whatever….things that would spark an idea and I’d put it in a folder for the future. So I always had a ‘what’s next’ in mind.

Here's what it boils down toWRITE. FINISH SOMETHING. BE HOPELESS.
      Write--Finish--Hopeless
(I’m trying to make that into an acronym that isn't reminiscent of something profane but I’ll move on now)

Write because whatever you learn you can never MASTER without putting it into practice.

Finish because NO PUBLISHER is going to buy an unfinished manuscript from an unpublished author, and also to prove to yourself you CAN finish a book.

Hopeless because I don’t want you to sit at your desk, hoping and praying and dying for an email that may or may not ever come. That’s a waste of time. Cast your bread upon the waters and start the next book until the waves wash soggy bread onto your ankles or you get a book contract.

HOWEVER (those capital letters aren’t meant in a yell-y way) Write and keep writing doesn’t mean you shouldn’t also be studying, learning, polishing your skills. That’s what Seekerville is for, to give you ideas for skills you could improve. That’s why you enter contests, to get a neutral pair of eyes on your manuscript.

Here’s what I’m leading up to…I just wanted to share this with you.
When I'd start a new book, I’d open up my Word document, a bright white surface upon which I was planning to explode my story and I’d lay one hand flat on that computer screen and I’d pray. I’d ask God to give me the desires of my heart and I’d ask of myself -- REMEMBER EVERYTHING YOU KNOW. Put everything you know into this book.

      To explode my story.

      To use strong words.

      To show don’t tell.

To make my characters charming and likeable and troubled and conflicted.

      To tell a great story.

Oh there's just so much to remember!!!!! YOU HAVE TO REMEMBER ALL OF IT!!!!!

      REMEMBER EVERYTHING YOU KNOW.
Put it all on the page.

Pray that God will give you the desire of your heart.

Pray that God will make your words more than you are capable of creating.

And then write a book so good, so captivating, so fun, so fast, so perfect that NO EDITOR ON THE PLANET CAN SAY NO. A book so good that Love Inspired will say, “Oh, yes, we will JUST this once publish a 100,000 word women’s fiction because we are that in love with your book.”

A book so good that if Barbour Publishing just can’t quite bring themselves to publish a 150,000 word fantasy with aliens and dinosaurs and ghosts, they’ll be so excited about it they’ll phone someone who can.

A book so good J.K Rowling will invite you to her castle for high tea and ask you for pointers.

That’s your first job, for all we talk about marketing, your most important, fundamental job is to write the best book in the world.
REMEMBER EVERYTHING YOU KNOW.WRITE THE BEST BOOK IN THE WORLD.AND THEN, WHEN YOU ARE FINISHED, WRITE ANOTHER ONE.
Now, tell me what you’re working on right now. Can you see that you’re letting yourself get away with doing less than your best? Are you clinging to scenes and moments you love even though they don't tighten and advance your story? What can you change? What do you NOT love about your book? Let’s talk today about strengthening your book to make it the best book in the world.

      Click to Pre-Order on Amazon
Seth Kincaid survived a fire in a cave, but he's never been the same. He was always a reckless youth, but now he's gone over the edge. He ran off to the Civil War and came back crazier than ever.
After the war, nearly dead from his injuries, it appears Seth got married. Oh, he's got a lot of excuses, but his wife isn't happy to find out Seth doesn't remember her. Callie has searched, prayed, and worried. Now she's come to the Kincaid family's ranch in Colorado to find her lost husband.

Callie isn't a long-suffering woman. Once she knows her husband is alive, she wants to kill him. She's not even close to forgiving him for abandoning her.

Then more trouble shows up in the form of a secret Seth's pa kept for years. The Kincaid brothers might lose their ranch if they can't sort things out. It's enough to drive a man insane--but somehow it's all making Seth see things more clearly. And now that he knows what he wants, a person would have to be crazy to stand in his way.

LaTisha is back in the third and final book that details her sassy tongue and tender heart. This is the book that almost didn't happen.

When Barbour Publishing discontinued the mystery line, Your Goose is Cooked was known as Recipe for Deceit, but the end of the mystery line was announced before its release date. What's a writer to do? LaTisha wanted so much to have this story told. Everyone wanted to know what happened to Mayor Taser and his—uh, loving wife after his appearance in Murder on the Ol' Bunions. I never thought I would release these as e-books, but Barbour reverted rights to the story and the authors put our heads together. So this is the story that almost wasn't. I'm so thrilled to finally allow LaTisha's fans to get a glimpse into her life with Hardy as they get ready to celebrate their 40th anniversary, buy and run Maple Gap's restaurant, Your Goose is Cooked, and solve the mystery of the hired gun who turns up dead during the mayoral election.

For every story there is always a need for an audience. E-books are hot and becoming hotter. Though the price wars wage on and many authors hesitate to stick their toes in the waters that is e-publishing, there are also success stories. The main concerns for e-books of any type and at any price range, are that they are well written and well edited, the latter being a common mistake of new authors.

You cannot put out a book that is not edited and expect to maintain the integrity of the work. Getting a freelance editor to work on your story is an expense, yes, but it is one that is well worth the cost. One of my friends has asked not one or two, but over a dozen people to read and critique the work in order to avoid errors of spelling, grammar, plot and pacing. That's better than nothing, and the feeling is that most people can catch grammar and spelling errors. But it really takes a professional to catch your story’s plot and pacing issues and suggest solid fixes that take your work to the next level.

What do I recommend when looking for a freelance editor? Ask around for suggestions of professionals who have edited within your genre, then ask them questions and pay close attention to their experience. When you are in the middle of having your manuscript edited, it is not the time to decide you don't like the editor's feedback. Do your homework ahead of time, then sit back and watch your story get shined to a high gloss!

There are many tutorials online to show you step-by-step, how to convert a stock image to a book cover, while also explaining the legal mumbo-jumbo of using stock images.

Another important element--an actual book cover! All three of my ebooks started with plain covers but I wanted something more. Having a bit of tech savvy--actually, it's more like Photoshop savvy--will come in handy. Because I use a Mac, Pixelmator was the program of choice to add layers and text to the stock images I selected for the covers. I believe the new images give a warmer feel to the stories and since each cover depicts a place or moment within the story, all the better!

So give your old books new life after the rights have reverted and try your hand at the whole new world of ebooks. Just like any venture in publishing, marketing is key, but any author worth their salt is used to that, right? Right?!

What is it about ebooks that delight you? What frustrates you? Leave a comment to get your name in the drawing for an Apple or Vera Bradley (verabradley.com) gift card (25.00), winners choice, a second commentor will receive a copy of Murder on the 'Old Bunions.
