Hi, Jack Templar here.
I’ve been asked to share a few thoughts with you here onBreath Of Life. I assume if you’re reading this that you are either already a monsterhunter or well on your way to becoming one. I say this out front because if you’re nota monster hunter and you just happened across this website by accident, then youshould go away right now.
You heard me. Go on. Press the back button, the off button, any button really. Because if you don’t, you run the risk of being dragged intothis world of vampires, zombies, demons, werewolves and every other type of scarymonster you can think of. The choice is yours. If you’re smart, you’ll just walkaway.
Still here? OK, don’t say I didn’t warn you. When a demonicmugwump shows up to chew off a few of your toes, don’t blame me!
I wanted to share with you today one of the importantlessons I learned my first night as a monster hunter. If you read my book where Idescribed that night in detail, you know that all kids, both man and monster, areprotected under the Rule of Quattuordecim. That means that unless your pick up asword and fight, you’re off-limits until sundown of your fourteenth birthday.(Quattuordecim is really just afancy Latin word for fourteen.)
I’ve realized that this Rule (which is the result of anancient truce between man and monster) is similar to how parents try to protect us kidsfrom things they know are going to be hard and dangerous.
Sure, they know there will be a time when we have to standup on our own two feet, but parents want to hold on until the very last minute toprotect us.
I know, I know. This can drive you CRAZY.
I grew up an orphan but was raised by my Aunt Sophie who waslike a mother to me. I used to hate it when she tried to shelter me fromthings. But now that she’s gone, there’s nothing I wouldn’t give to have her tell me tobe careful or to slow down one more time.
Now that I spend every day either hunting or being hunted bythe scariest monsters in the world, I kind of wish I had listened to her.
I’m not saying that you shouldn’t be prepared to join thefight when duty calls (especially since you chose to read this, the fight willlikely come to you).
I’m just saying that when your parents and other people wholove you are trying to slow you down a little and telling you to take your timeto get ready for the big challenges, just give them a break.
Understand they’re just trying to help you. They know what Iknow now…once you take that step and join the fight, there’s no going back.
Thanks for listening. And, if you ignore my advice, if youignore my warnings and read Jack Templar Monster Hunter, then I’ll see you on thefront lines of the coming Creach War.
Until then…
Do your duty, come what may.
Jack Templar.
